The Framett MapleTM PPAF
Acer rubrum
JSC proudly its newest discovery, the Framett Maple! This tree is a variegated maple, similar to the Shelina's Beauty MapleTM with color year round. In the spring and summer the leaves exhibit a creamy yellow pigment to go along with the normal green color. There is even different variations to how the leaves are variegated, some leaves have the yellow speckled along the green and others have large splotches of the yellow color. Also, some leaves have more yellow than others, so the degree of variegation changes with each leaf. The biggest difference in the leaves of the Framett MapleTM PPAF and the Shelina's Beauty MapleTM is that the Framett Maple PPAF has smaller leaves as compared to the Shelina's Beauty MapleTM. The new growth of the Framett is an orange-red color for approximately three weeks before it turns to the normal yellow and green variegation. In the fall the leaves turn to a burgundy mixture consisting of purples, pinks, and reddish-browns throughout the fall season.
The Framett is also extremely hardy. It has already proven that it is both drought resistant and winter hardy. In April 2007 the tree survived a very late freeze for our area in which temperatures dropped into the low 20's. This was a particularly damaging freeze to most other trees because essentially all of them had budded already.
Also, in the Spring of 2007 middle Tennessee underwent a 2 month drought in the time frame where the most rain of the year is expected. Many annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees were damaged or killed by the freeze and the following drought, but the Framett has continued to flourish.
The normal growth of this tree will reach a top height of 30-35 feet, and also can be sold as a clump because of its brilliant color making it excellent for all landscaping applications as a shade as well as ornamental tree due to its distinct and beautiful coloration as well as its versatility in size. It also has an extremely dense "head" on it, making it look much more thickly foliated. The Framett is also a slower grower than the Shelina's Beauty, another distinguishing feature between the two.
